Is it possible to format either default or html placeholder text?

I’m trying to add either default answer or HTML placeholder text to an essay question with line breaks:

E.g. Please provide 3 examples in the text box below:

Example 1:

Example 2:

Example 3:

Is this possible without PHP or JavaScript? I’ve tried writing it as a string with “<br />”, pulling it in from hidden value action and a previous essay question where it’s formatted correctly, using the “delimiter” attribute in a merge code for a multi-select picklist question – everything treats “<br />” as a string and includes it in the text (Example 1:<br /><br />Example 2:<br /><br />Example 3:). Has anyone successfully done this? And if you’ve done it with PHP or JavaScript, can you share the snippet? I know the easy/best solution is just splitting this into 3 separate essay questions, but the person I’m building for is intent on getting it in this format.

It is not possible to format either the HTML placeholder or the default answer.  And if it were, i would suggest that you not use it.  The HTML placeholder will disappear as soon as the respondent starts typing, so you would have to hope that they memorized the format you wanted.  If you used the default answer, you would be forcing your respondents to take the extra step of deleting the example before the could enter their own.  And hopefully they memorized the format before they deleted it.

I think that the Additional Instructional Text field would be your best option for your example text.  Review the SurveyGizmo documentation for details –
